Over 40 people join Singing For The Brain at the ‘Box That Rocks’

Better, the UK’s largest provider of public leisure, are providing weekly space in a dementia friendly environment at the Copper Box Arena, on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, for Alzheimer’s Society’s Singing For The Brain group in Hackney with over 40 attendees coming to the first session on Thursday 15 June 2017.

Singing for the Brain, uses singing to bring people with dementia together in a friendly and stimulating environment. The first session at the Copper Box Arena also coincided with National Cupcake Day, an initiative launched by Alzheimer’s Society to generate awareness and fundraising for the fight against dementia. Staff at the Copper Box Arena got behind the initiative to support the charity along with celebrating the launch of the session.

Better is committed to supporting Alzheimer’s Society especially on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park with the East London Dementia branch. A larger space was needed for the Singing For The Brain group as they had outgrown their previous space. Several meetings between Better’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park Healthwise Co-ordinator, Kimberley White, and Community Sport Manager, Louise Smith, with the Dementia Team for Hackney & Newham ensured the relocation of the session was seamless and of benefit for the group. All staff at the Copper Box Arena have undertaken dementia awareness training and are all Dementia Friends, with the venue improving signage to move towards the venue becoming a dementia friendly facility.

Kimberley, said, "We are really excited about this partnership with Alzheimer’s Society, especially the Hackney and Newham groups. Our staffs' support for this has been amazing and they have all fully supported our work and commitments to making our venues on The Park, the London Aquatics Centre and Copper Box Arena, accessible for all.”

The response and feedback from the Dementia Support Manager, Joe Ellis, was overwhelmingly positive. Joe was full of praise for the venue and staff and is looking forward to continuing such a great partnership in the future, hopefully including a national Singing For The Brain event in 2018.

Singing For The Brain sessions at the Copper Box Arena will continue every Thursday afternoon. If you are interested in learning more about the sessions please contact Alzheimer’s Society’s Newham branch who run the services in Newham and Hackney at, newham@alzheimers.org.uk or call 020 8472 0658.
