Healthwise helps Janet rebuild her confidence, strength and wellbeing

Janet Johnston has transformed her physical and mental wellbeing through the
Healthwise Programme. She is now more active, confident and positive about the
future.

After returning to London following time away, Janet faced several challenges, such as
having no job or income at first and needed to reconnect with NHS cancer care.

Janet was also managing the effects of cancer treatment and menopause without
hormone replacement therapy. Her mental health was suffering, and she could not
afford to use a gym or swimming pool.

“I was worrying more and more about my physical and mental health. Healthwise came
into my life at just the right time.”

At the start of the programme, everyday activities had become difficult. Janet struggled
with her balance, found stairs challenging and had very little stamina.

She was also protective of her abdomen and right-side following cancer surgery.
Ongoing weakness and pain made physical activity feel daunting.

Her confidence and motivation were low. Leaving the house and completing everyday
tasks often felt overwhelming.

“I knew I needed more than any kind of talk therapy. I needed to find a way back to me.”
The Healthwise Programme gave Janet the structure, encouragement and practical
support she needed. Regular sessions with our Healthwise co-ordinator Roxy helped
her set clear goals and focus on what she wanted to achieve.

The conversations gave Janet space to reflect on her progress. Comparing her answers
from the first session with those at the end made her feel proud.

“I knew I needed help. I needed to be motivated, and I needed to be challenged.”
Janet also received advice on how to exercise safely and effectively. This included
guidance on using gym equipment, weights and resistance machines.
The coordinated approach helped her feel comfortable and supported throughout the
programme.

“It felt like a well-coordinated approach. I felt very safe, safe to talk and safe to really be
honest.”

Janet committed fully to the programme and quickly increased her activity levels. She
now visits the gym twice a week and swims three times a week.

She also walks more for pleasure and enjoys speaking with familiar faces at the pool
and in the changing rooms.

“I am so much more active now. I love all of it.”

The positive changes have gone far beyond physical fitness. Janet feels happier,
healthier and more connected to the life she wants to lead.

Following her cancer diagnosis and treatment, changes to her body and mental health
had felt difficult to manage. The programme helped her see a future again.

“I feel like I have fallen in love with myself again, as well as falling back in love with
London life.”

Janet has achieved her original goal of improving her overall health. She is now setting
new goals to keep building on her progress.

She wants to meet more people, walk for pleasure and continue swimming. Janet also
plans to complete more strength sessions at home when she cannot visit the gym.

Others have noticed the difference too. Janet says people comment on changes to her
shape and the confidence in her voice.

“I have a whole new outlook on life now, for the present and for the future.”

The Healthwise Programme helped Janet overcome financial, physical and emotional
barriers to being active. It gave her the support and encouragement to make lasting
changes.

“I would not be where I am without it. I could not motivate myself to do anything initially
and I could not afford it either.”

Looking ahead, Janet is determined to continue prioritising her health and wellbeing.
She hopes her story will encourage others to accept support and take their first step
towards becoming more active.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time on the Healthwise Programme. I’m truly grateful that this
programme is in my borough.”
